*Founded between the III and the IV century,everif some,researchers estimated between the VIII and the IX century,Acaya was originally called Segine.
*It was located at the intersection of two ancient Roman roads,the Via Traiana Calabra,which connected the coastal parts with the outback and the ViaLocarro that linked Segine to Lecce.
*Segine had a tower with the strategic purpose of relief and military support to the passing roman troops.
After several changes of ownership,in 1195 the estate of Segine become part of the County of Lecce.
*In 1263,the Angevin King conceded the fief to the St. John Evangelist’s Monastery of Lecce.
*After several passages,in 1271 King Charles I D’Angio’ conceded it to Filippo De Turziaco Ammirato.
*In 1283,it was donated to Raimondo Gubaldo.
*In 1290 ,it was given to Rinaldo Gagliardi.
*In 1294,King Charles II D’Angio’ presented the fief to the capitain Gervasio Dell’Acaya.
*In 1535 Giangiacomo Dell’Acaya built fortifications,enlarged the castle,giving welfare to the fief and gave to it the name of his family.
*Dell’Acaya family kept for three centuries until 1608.
